Attorney General Pam Bondi took to X over the weekend with a bold statement: President Trump is leading the most transparent administration in American history. Her post was about efforts to release documents concerning the attempted assassination of Trump last July. But the folks commenting in the replies had a completely different investigation in mind – the one into Jeffrey Epstein. And they weren't buying it.
Liar, snapped several people – along with many much harsher insults. One conservative YouTuber wrote: I will vote for whatever President ... campaigns on arresting Pam Bondi over the cover-up of the Epstein Files. After folding into his coalition many non-traditional voters from fringe corners of the internet, Trump now finds himself confronted with the conspiratorial thinking he has stoked.
At issue isn't so much the previously unreleased pictures of luminaries in Epstein's company but the vast swathes of redacted files. Trump had previously suggested he would support the release of investigation files, but Friday's unremarkable release landed with a thud.
Joe Uscinski, an associate professor at the University of Miami, noted that Trump's coalition is increasingly about skepticism towards institutions rather than traditional Republican goals. Many in this movement believe in narratives about child sex trafficking, fed by Epstein's crimes and conspiracy theories bleeding into mainstream discourse.
The potential for political trouble is not lost on Trump's team. In a Vanity Fair article, chief of staff Susie Wiles described younger male voters drawn to Trump because of promises regarding Epstein as Joe Rogan listeners. These new supporters aren’t necessarily wedded to the Republican Party, a precarious reality underscored by polling data.
Prominent congressional figures such as Marjorie Taylor Greene and Thomas Massie have voiced criticism over the handling of the Epstein files, alleging the justice department's misconduct in releasing documents. Though backlash abounds from traditional GOP members, the influencer community remains quiet following the release.
As the debates over Epstein files and MAGA controversies unfold, Wright's warning rings clear: without solid backing, a once powerful movement could face an uncertain future.
