The White House has unveiled plans for a gold-accented giant victory arch dubbed the Arc de Trump, that Donald Trump wants built in the nation's capital. The 250ft (76m) monument, if approved, would be taller than the US Capitol building and the Lincoln Memorial, and feature a golden Lady Liberty-like torch and crown. Trump has proclaimed it would be the GREATEST and MOST BEAUTIFUL Triumphal Arch, anywhere in the World and a wonderful addition to the Washington D.C. area for all Americans to enjoy for decades to come.
The arch is part of Trump's efforts to reshape Washington's landscape and faces legal hurdles similar to his new ballroom project. Official plans have been filed with the Commission of Fine Arts for review. The project, which will be partly funded by American taxpayers, has its funding lined up with $2 million set aside from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and an additional $13 million in matching funds.
Renderings of the arch depict gold inscriptions stating One Nation Under God, topped with two golden eagles, and guarded by statues of four golden lions. White House spokesman Davis Ingle remarked the arch will be a visual reminder of the sacrifices made by American heroes over the past 250 years.
Trump desires the arch to resemble the Arc de Triomphe in France, intending it to welcome visitors from Arlington National Cemetery as they enter the city via the Memorial Bridge. He has expressed a belief that it will fill a supposed void in the landscape along a popular route to the Lincoln Memorial. The proposal is just one facet of Trump's ambitions for a transformed Washington, D.C., including the upcoming renaming of the Kennedy Center to include his name and other significant renovations.
