Taiwan has insisted it is a sovereign, independent nation, after US President Donald Trump cautioned it against formally declaring independence from China. Trump's remarks came after a two-day summit in Beijing, during which he expressed his position on the self-governing island claimed by China. After talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump stated he would soon decide on an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan, highlighting the US's legal commitment to supplying Taiwan with a means of self-defence. Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te emphasized that Taiwan sees itself as already independent and does not require formal declaration. Additionally, it was reiterated that Taiwan aims to preserve the existing status quo, neither declaring independence nor uniting with China. Despite differing international views, Taiwan maintains a firm stance on its sovereignty and democratic values.
