Iranian security forces have 'violently arrested' Nobel Peace Prize winner and women's rights activist Narges Mohammadi, according to her foundation. The 53-year-old activist was detained in the eastern city of Mashhad alongside other activists. The Nobel Committee voiced its 'deep concern' over the brutal arrest and called on Iranian authorities to clarify her whereabouts, ensure her safety, and release her unconditionally.

Mohammadi was awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts against female oppression in Iran and her promotion of human rights. She was recently given temporary release from Tehran's notorious Evin prison for medical reasons in December 2024 but was expected to return to prison.

Her latest arrest was reported to occur during a memorial for Khosrow Alikordi, a lawyer whose suspicious death has sparked calls for an independent investigation. Witnesses reported that several activists were detained during the ceremony after they shouted slogans against the government.

Taghi Rahmani, Mohammadi's husband, described the arrest as violent and indicative of an escalating crackdown on dissent in Iran.

In recent weeks, Mohammadi condemned the Iranian authorities for increasing repression and stated that peace in Iran is undermined by censorship and violence. She has been vocal in her defiance against government restrictions, including refusing to wear the mandatory headscarf.

Throughout her life, Mohammadi has faced significant persecution, with more than 36 years of sentences and numerous prior arrests for her activism.
