Sundus al-Kurd's heart was filled with mixed emotions of fear and joy as she awaited the return of her daughter, Bisan, at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. After being separated for over two years due to the war in Gaza, their long-awaited reunion took place following the evacuation of several premature infants from Gaza’s Shifa Hospital amidst heavy fighting in November 2023.

During her time of uncertainty, Sundus struggled to learn about her daughter's fate while living in despair and hope. After a painful wait, she received news that Bisan had survived and was safely being cared for in Egypt, identified by the pink bracelet she was given after birth.

This reunion represents a rare moment of happiness against a backdrop of hardship, as at least eight children who were evacuated as premature babies in the early weeks of the conflict returned and were reunited with their families. However, despite this small triumph, the situation in Gaza remains fragile and fraught with tension, as political complexities linger following a ceasefire established by US President Donald Trump.

Sundus's story underscores the heart-wrenching challenges faced by families caught in war, seeking connection amidst chaos while also revealing the dire humanitarian circumstances still affecting the region as it grapples with reconstruction and a political path forward.
