Israeli Strikes Kill Six People in Gaza, Including Al Jazeera Cameraman

In the early hours of Saturday, an Israeli strike on a house in Gaza’s Bureij refugee camp left six people dead, including a child. One of the victims was Ahmed Wishah, a cameraman for Al Jazeera, who had been filming the ongoing conflict.

Al Jazeera issued an immediate statement condemning the “heinous crime” of targeting and killing its correspondent. The network claims the attack violates international law and underscored its commitment to protecting journalists on the ground. "The death of Mr Wishah is a new and flagrant violation of all international laws and norms," the statement read.

Israel’s Defence Forces (IDF) responded by accusing Wishah of being a Hamas rifleman and of serving as a sniper operative, though no evidence has been presented. In a separate incident, four family members—including two children—were killed in an overnight home strike in the Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City, according to local hospital and civil‑defence reports.

Hamas‑run health authorities have tallied 1,007 deaths in Gaza since the ceasefire was activated last October, a figure that the United Nations regards as reliable. The UN and aid groups continue to call for more humanitarian assistance and aid trucks to reach the town, though many residents remain deprived of basic services. Tom Fletcher, head of the UN’s humanitarian arm, reported that 70% of Gaza’s population still lacks adequate shelter, sanitation, and essential services.

The ceasefire agreement also prohibits Hamas from participating in Gaza’s governance and demands disarmament. However, the group has yet to fully comply, stalling prospects for a lasting peace. Both sides have accused the other of violating the ceasefire, as Israeli forces extend control over additional portions of the territory.

The latest conflict began when Hamas militants launched an attack from southern Israel on 7 October 2023, killing roughly 1,200 civilians and taking 251 hostages. Since then, more than 73,000 people have died in Gaza due to Israeli military operations.
