An Iranian drone was shot down as it 'aggressively approached' an American aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea on Tuesday, a US military spokesman has said. An F-35C stealth fighter jet which took off from the USS Abraham Lincoln warship shot down the drone 'in self-defence' to protect the aircraft carrier and its personnel, US Central Command spokesman Capt Tim Hawkins stated.

The ship was approximately 500 miles from the Iranian coast when the drone approached it with 'unclear intent.' Fortunately, no US equipment was damaged and no service members were harmed during the incident. This escalation comes as the US continues to bolster its military presence in the region amid rising tensions with Tehran.

US President Donald Trump has indicated a willingness to defend American interests and personnel, threatening military action against Iran unless a new nuclear deal is reached. Despite the aggressive atmosphere, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that negotiations between the US and Iran are still scheduled for later this week, underscoring the administration’s desire for diplomacy while keeping military options open.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, previously warned of dire consequences should Iran be attacked, hinting at a potential regional war. Tehran has not yet issued a response regarding the drone incident, nor have they commented publicly about the ongoing diplomatic talks, which are reportedly set to continue despite the heightened military tensions. Capt Hawkins mentioned that military support from the US was able to de-escalate a separate incident involving harassment of a US-flagged merchant vessel by Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz, further illustrating the fragile nature of security in the area.
