US President Donald Trump has asserted that next week's state visit from King Charles and Queen Camilla could 'absolutely' help repair relations with the UK. In a phone interview with the BBC, Trump responded to a question about the potential for improved diplomatic ties, affirming, 'Absolutely. He's fantastic. He's a fantastic man.'
He added, 'I know him well, I've known him for years. He's a brave man, and he's a great man. They would absolutely be a positive.'
The upcoming visit is set to take place over four days, during which the King will meet Trump at the White House and deliver an address to Congress. They will spend two days in Washington DC before visiting New York, Virginia, and Bermuda.
The Foreign Office stated that the trip will commemorate the 250th anniversary of US independence and celebrate long-standing ties of shared prosperity, security, and history between the two nations.
In the interview, Trump also addressed UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, suggesting that Starmer could only 'recover' politically if he reevaluated his immigration policies. He criticized the current administration's direction, particularly relating to the Iran conflict and energy policies. Trump maintained that the UK should significantly increase oil and gas extraction from the North Sea, expressing dissatisfaction with the UK's support in the region's political upheavals. The former President's remarks reveal a commitment to strengthening the US-UK relationship amidst ongoing geopolitical challenges.
