In Lapland, the renowned “Official Hometown of Santa Claus,” the tourist season from October to March, typically celebrated for festive cheer, is causing significant inconveniences for some residents. In a recent visit, locals like law student Mariel Tähtivaara shared their sentiments, highlighting the challenges of navigating daily activities amidst a constant stream of tourists.

After dining at a local establishment, Tähtivaara encountered fellow shoppers inquiring about food products, reflecting the language barriers and cultural differences that come with mass tourism. Such interactions, though seemingly minor, contribute to her feeling overwhelmed during peak tourist times.

“This is our town,” she remarked, expressing the fatigue many in Rovaniemi experience when swarmed by visitors eager to capture moments with Santa and experience the winter landscape. The rising tourist numbers have solidified Rovaniemi's status as a winter wonderland, yet it also poses a dilemma for locals managing everyday tasks amid crowds, prompting discussions about the balance between tourism revenue and resident comfort.
