A Russian drone attack on a market in southern Ukraine has killed five people and injured 21, including a 14-year-old girl, the prosecutor general's office says. The attack took place at 09:50 local time (06.50 GMT) in the town of Nikopol, just across the Dnipro river from land occupied by Russia since their full-scale invasion. Pictures published by the regional prosecutor show smashed market kiosks strewn with metal, glass, and food. This incident follows a day of violence across the country, where at least 15 civilians were reportedly killed due to drone and missile strikes.
In retaliation, Ukraine also targeted the Russian city of Taganrog, resulting in at least one death and four serious injuries. According to a Ukrainian Defence Ministry official, the casualties on the Russian side are attributed to Russian air defense operations. Meanwhile, Kyiv has also claimed to have hit a factory in Togliatti, known for supplying parts for Russia's military operations.
The situation remains tense in Nikopol, with many residents having evacuated due to frequent attacks. The latest strike has raised alarms due to its timing during a busy morning, leading to high casualties.
The prosecutor confirmed that two individuals were injured in a subsequent strike at the same location. Investigations into these attacks as potential war crimes are underway. President Zelensky’s recent offer for a truce during the Easter holidays has gone unacknowledged by Moscow, who continues to intensify aerial assaults. This pattern of major daytime attacks suggests a troubling escalation in hostilities, as efforts for a ceasefire mediated by international partners seem to stall.
