On a night when temperatures fell to -20C (-4F), UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer condemned Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy sector as 'barbaric' and 'particularly depraved'. The comments came after Starmer spoke with US President Donald Trump, following Russia's strikes on power plants in Kyiv and other critical infrastructure across the country.

The assaults occurred just after Trump had requested a one-week pause in hostilities from Russian President Vladimir Putin due to the severe cold gripping Ukraine. Notably, Trump mentioned that Putin had 'kept his word' but expressed disappointment in the renewed attacks as negotiations continued in Abu Dhabi.

The damage from the recent strikes was significant, leaving over 1,000 tower blocks in Kyiv without heating and rendering a power plant in Kharkiv irreparable. Many residents sought refuge in metro stations to escape the bitter cold, with authorities setting up warming centers and importing generators to manage extended power outages.

Additionally, NATO's Secretary-General Mark Rutte visited Kyiv to emphasize the need for member states to provide the necessary support, including missiles, as Ukraine struggles with energy shortages and ongoing conflict since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
