Ukraine and Russia have each accused one another of hundreds of violations of a short ceasefire coinciding with Orthodox Easter celebrations. The Ukrainian military reported that Russian forces had committed 2,299 violations since the truce began, while Russia's defense ministry claimed that Ukraine had committed 1,971 violations, including three attempted counter-attacks in Dnipropetrovsk region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that his nation's forces would respond symmetrically to Russian attacks, promoting Easter as a time for peace. He expressed hopes for an extension of the truce beyond Easter to facilitate stalled peace negotiations. However, Russia has rejected this notion, indicating that attacks would resume post-holiday.
The allegations continued as Russian troops reportedly launched 28 attacks and conducted nearly 2,000 drone strikes, though they refrained from bomb and missile usage. An incident in Ukraine's Sumy region involved a Russian drone hitting an ambulance, injuring three medics.
Both military forces exchanged accusations of reciprocated attacks, with claims indicating four thwarted advancements by Ukrainian troops in Sumy and Donetsk. The Easter ceasefire was unilaterally announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier in the week, following persistent calls from Ukraine for a temporary cessation of hostilities. Despite Putin's previous agreement to halt strikes on energy infrastructure, both nations maintain a low expectation for any real ceasefire, viewing the current arrangement with skepticism.
