WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump shifted toward a more conciliatory approach with Democratic leaders in Minnesota on Monday, a sudden change in tack following an outcry over the second fatal shooting of a protester by federal agents this month during the administration’s nationwide crackdown on undocumented immigrants.

The about-face comes after Saturday’s shooting death of Alex Pretti by federal agents raised doubts — including from some Republicans — over how the Trump administration has gone about aggressively deporting migrants and confronting protesters opposed to the policy.

Trump’s administration altered oversight of immigration operations in Minnesota while he offered a warmer tone toward Gov. Tim Walz, indicating they were now on a “similar wavelength.” However, some Republicans voiced their concerns about federal tactics and the overall handling of the situation.

Trump’s reaction reversed his previous uncompromising stance on mass deportations. It also came after criticism mounted against his administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement practices. The president had previously promised a hardline approach during his 2024 campaign.

In a notable turn, Trump dispatched Tom Homan as his new border czar and highlighted the need for better coordination in federal operations.

Some GOP leaders, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott, expressed measured criticism and called for a recalibration of strategies. Vermont’s Governor Phil Scott condemned the federal response as a failure of coordination and suggested a reset was necessary.

With tensions still high, Trump’s comments aimed to de-escalate the situation, although he faced scrutiny over his muted response to the deaths in Minneapolis compared to his reactions to violence targeting his supporters.
