Trump Declines Joint AI Venture with China, Citing Security Concerns
President Donald Trump rejected a proposal for a US‑China joint venture to develop artificial intelligence, warning that it could lead to the "giving away secrets" to the country’s main economic rival.
Speaking at the launch of the government’s new AI‑powered portal, America.gov, Trump said the United States was "leading by a lot" in the field and should protect its edge. "If we do that, we’re going to be giving a lot of secrets that we have that they would want to have," he told the media.
The comments followed the establishment of a new AI dialogue and communication channel between Washington and Beijing after President Xi Jinping’s visit last week. While the two sides have agreed to meet again in November, Trump remains firmly against any shared project that would involve China.
Domestically, Trump has dismissed safety concerns about AI, calling them a "hoax" and comparing them to a "global warming scam," even as polls show many Americans fear the technology could pose a moderate risk to humanity.
