August Hanning

August Hanning, who led Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service from 1998 to 2005, has been taken into custody on suspicion of espionage, treason, and obtaining classified information for a foreign state.

Authorities say Hanning used sensitive material to craft an analysis for an overseas intelligence officer and maintained contact with another foreign spy network, though the involved countries remain unnamed.

His former BND colleague, known as Manfred D, is also arrested after prosecutors claim he supplied nearly 2,000 documents to Hanning for money and helped arrange the alleged snooping.

Both men are scheduled to appear in court soon, with Hanning due on Wednesday and Manfred D expected on Tuesday.

The case has raised alarm about security protocols, recalling a 2023 treason case in which a senior BND officer passed war‑related data to Russia.
