Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile was charged with treason after a heavy‑handed police raid on the night of 30 August, according to his lawyer. The raid, which followed the country’s August 13 presidential election, resulted in the death of a former cabinet minister and the arrest of a number of opposition figures.
Mundubile, who denied any involvement in an alleged insurgency, was in hiding at a United Nations building in Lusaka when police demanded his surrender. Following pressure from President Hakainde Hichilema, the opposition leader and his running mate Zambia Eye were transferred to authorities and charged.
Mundubile’s lawyer, Milner Katolo, said 17 colleagues, including Makebi Zulu, were also accused of treason. He stated that the opposition is prepared to challenge the allegations in court.
The official election results, released by the National Electoral Commission, record a 60% vote share for incumbent President Hichilema and 38% for Mundubile. The post‑election period has seen widespread arrests and security operations that left many opposition politicians in hiding.
The unity of Zambia’s political arena is in question, as the opposition was prevented from filing any legal challenge before the deadline was sealed by authorities on Monday. The newly elected president will be sworn in for a second term on 1 September.
