In brief

A high‑speed collision near Urda in Toledo province on Saturday killed 68 and injured about 80. Two South Korean nationals were among the injured, with one having minor injuries and the other hospitalized. Spanish officials are probing the cause while foreign ministries coordinate with victims’ families.

Two South Korean nationals were injured when a high‑speed train collided with a stationary carriage near Urda in Toledo province, Spain, killing at least 68 people and injuring about 80.

The crash, described as a Renfe AVE train striking a stationary Iryo carriage, occurred on the Madrid‑Seville high‑speed line outside Madrid and was confirmed by Yonhap, Al Jazeera, and UPI as having caused 68 fatalities.

Al Jazeera reported that roughly 80 passengers were injured, with about 50 seriously and 15 critically, while UPI estimated about 100 injured and noted more than 500 passengers on the two trains.

According to Yonhap, the South Korean foreign ministry confirmed that one of the injured passengers sustained only minor injuries and was discharged after treatment; the other remains hospitalized.

Spanish authorities are investigating the incident, with the transport minister citing a rail‑control error that allowed a train to cross a red signal, and the regional government declared three days of mourning.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez:

Today the whole of Spain is grieving.

Only Yonhap reports the specific injury details of the Korean passengers; other outlets mention only the overall numbers of wounded.

Investigations into signaling failures and possible negligence have begun, with emergency crews still searching the wreckage for additional casualties.
