In brief

A multi‑agency search on the Kedartal trek in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district uncovered seven bodies and one missing person after heavy snowfall and avalanches on October 29. The recovered remains were air‑lifted to Matli Helipad, and authorities are preparing to return them to families. Earlier in the week, two other bodies were identified by the district administration, indicating an ongoing recovery effort.

Seven bodies of trekkers who disappeared on Nov. 6 from the Kedartal trail in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district have been recovered, while one remains missing, a local government official announced on Friday. The party of eight, including a trekking guide, went missing on Oct. 29 amid heavy snowfall and avalanches.

According to Xinhua, the bodies were air‑lifted to Matli Helipad and authorities are arranging handover for the families. The multi‑agency search and rescue operation was repeatedly hampered by harsh weather conditions.

Earlier this week, the district administration reported the recovery of two bodies on Nov. 4. The victims were identified as Rintu Mondol, 40, and Uday Ghosh, 30, both reportedly from West Bengal, as per the Hindu’s account of the recovery.

The Tribune reported that three bodies of men were recovered from different locations during the operation; two of those were retrieved on Thursday, indicating a staggered recovery effort across the trail.

With one trekker still missing, the search continues on the Kedartal route, as authorities push to locate the final victim amid ongoing avalanche risks.
