The bodies of at least four fishermen were recovered in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh after their boat was swept up by Cyclone Murasu, authorities said Thursday.
The victims, all from the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu, were fishing together when their boat capsized roughly two kilometres from the shore, prompting a rapid search by local officials and the Indian Coast Guard.
Three bodies washed ashore on Kothapatnam beach, while a fourth was retrieved by Coast Guard divers at sea. A total of nine fishermen had set out for fishing on Oct. 29, the day the cyclone struck the country’s southern coastal areas.
Five fishermen remain missing, authorities said, while a senior government official confirmed that efforts were underway to locate the missing men.
Raja Babu, senior government official, said:
My team is in touch with our counterparts in Tamil Nadu regarding the missing fishermen, and efforts are being made to find them.
