The US space agency NASA has blocked Chinese citizens with valid US visas from accessing its facilities, effectively preventing them from participating in one of the premier space research centers in the world.
On September 5, Chinese nationals who were working as contractors or students at NASA learned through Bloomberg News that they were denied access to NASA's systems and facilities.
Nasa confirmed that the restrictions are necessary for the security of its operations, stating that Chinese nationals would be barred from using agency resources to ensure the integrity of their work.
This move comes amid heightened concerns in the US regarding China's rapid advancements in space technology, escalating the competitive dynamic between the two nations.
Chinese astronauts are already excluded from the International Space Station as a result of existing US restrictions on data sharing with China, which further diminishes opportunities for collaboration. Accusations of espionage involving Chinese scientists have led to stricter scrutiny over Chinese students studying in scientific fields within the US.
Nasa's press secretary confirmed that internal actions have been taken to restrict access for Chinese nationals, as they work to safeguard their operations. Notably, many Chinese nationals reported suddenly losing access and being barred from critical meetings both virtually and in person.
China's aspirations in space exploration are ambitious, with both governments vying for supremacy on the lunar surface. Sean Duffy, NASA's acting administrator, emphasized in a press conference that the space race is escalating, with priorities aimed at lunar milestones. Chinese officials have condemned US concerns, framing their endeavors as altruistic missions for humanity.
Recent discussions among US lawmakers have focused on the necessity for the country to secure its place on the Moon before China, stressing that potential dominant capabilities in space by adversaries present a significant risk to national security.
The ongoing rivalry extends beyond mere accomplishment; it encompasses vital resources on the Moon, such as rare minerals and helium, potential treasure troves for future technologies and advancements in various industries.
