In brief
A survey by Teikoku Databank found 1,477 food and beverage products in Japan will be raised in November, with seasonings dominating the list. The figures represent an almost ten‑fold jump from last year’s 150 items, and the total count of price‑hike products for the year passes 20,000 for the second straight year. A Teikoku Databank official said companies may slow the pace next year as they gauge consumer reactions.
A survey by Japanese research firm Teikoku Databank, reported by Xinhua, announced that 1,477 food and beverage items from 195 major manufacturers will see price increases in November, Japan’s biggest rise since last year. This number is almost ten times the 150 items that were set to rise in the same month in 2025.
Seasonings, including sauces and mayonnaise, accounted for the largest share with 644 items slated for hikes, followed by alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages with 417 items, the survey said.
In total, the number of products expected to climb price this year has reached 20,327, exceeding 20,000 for the second consecutive year, according to the Teikoku Databank data. The firm noted that the steady trend of price increases is driven by sustained cost pressures across key consumer goods.
A Teikoku Databank official indicated that the pace of price hikes may slow in the next year as companies intend to pass on higher costs while carefully gauging consumer responses. The same figures were reported by a Chinese news outlet, which confirmed the survey’s findings about the month’s price surge.
