THE HAGUE, Netherlands — The largest professional organization of genocide scholars announced on Monday that they believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
The International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS), which has about 500 members worldwide, including respected Holocaust experts, issued a resolution stating that Israel's actions meet the legal definition of genocide, along with constituting crimes against humanity and war crimes. This assertion is expected to intensify Israel's isolation in international public sentiment, joining a growing list of organizations that have made similar claims against its actions.
Melanie O’Brien, the organization's president who is also a professor of international law, expressed that experts in genocide studies have clearly identified the dire situation in Gaza. The resolution was endorsed by 86% of the voting members, though specific details on the vote were not disclosed.
The term 'genocide' is defined in a 1948 UN convention as acts intended to completely or partially exterminate a national, ethnic, racial or religious group. While various human rights organizations have suggested that Israel's actions may fit this description, the United Nations and Western governments emphasize that only a court can make such a determination. A case addressing this issue is currently being reviewed by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Israel, founded in part due to the atrocities of the Holocaust, has repeatedly denied the charges of genocide. It describes the accusations as an antisemitic 'blood libel' and contends that the violence perpetrated by Hamas, particularly the October 7 attack that initiated a recent violent outbreak, constitutes an act of genocide in itself.
This recent escalation has led to distressing humanitarian consequences in Gaza, where at least 63,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed in ongoing military operations, as reported by Gaza's health ministry. Approximately 2 million residents in the area are heavily impacted, with significant displacement and destruction of infrastructure.
As Israel defends its military actions, asserting it takes measures to protect civilians, the reality on the ground remains complex and dire. The discourse around the situation continues to spark global debates and backlash, with several international organizations joining the call for accountability regarding Israel's approach in Gaza.
