The attack occurred at the well-known Or Tor Kor Market, famous for its high-quality fresh produce and seafood. According to Thai police, the incident adds to a troubling backdrop of gun violence in Thailand, despite the country’s relatively high rates of gun ownership. While mass shootings are not a common occurrence, the nation has witnessed several tragic episodes in recent years. Notable incidents include a tragic shooting by a 14-year-old at a luxury mall in 2023, which resulted in two fatalities and five injuries, as well as a horrifying attack by an ex-policeman in October 2022 that claimed 37 lives, mostly children, at a childcare center in Nong Bua Lamphu province. Furthermore, in 2020, a soldier's rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima saw 29 people killed and many more injured. The ongoing issue of gun violence remains a concern for Thai citizens and authorities alike.
