Police have detained a person in connection to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of US news anchor Savannah Guthrie.
The person was taken into custody at a traffic stop, with police also conducting a search of their residence in Rio Rico, Arizona.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, was abducted from her home near Tucson over a week ago, leading to an extensive search and public appeals for her return from her family.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that they were executing a court-authorized search in relation to the investigation.
Law enforcement officials are tight-lipped about the detained individual's identity. However, a woman claiming to be the mother-in-law of the detained man has publicly stated that he is innocent and criticized the police for invading her property.
Hours before the detention, the FBI released footage showing a masked individual at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the night she disappeared. The man was recorded tampering with the security camera and is described as armed.
FBI Director Kash Patel indicated that new images recovered from the surveillance system show the suspect attempting to obscure the camera's view, suggesting a calculated approach to the crime.
Meanwhile, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have posted videos on social media appealing for information on their mother's whereabouts, stressing her urgent medical needs as she is without her vital medication.
The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information related to the case.
