Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Moscow of choosing Easter escalation over an Easter ceasefire after Russia carried out another deadly large-scale drone and missile attack on Ukraine. Six civilians were killed and 40 others injured as Russia launched hundreds of drones and missiles across the country. Major daytime attacks, which were once rare, have been increasing, coinciding with stalled efforts to end the war, particularly since the U.S. shifted its focus to conflicts in the Middle East.
Zelensky concurred with British intelligence assessments indicating the frontline situation in eastern Ukraine is currently the most favorable for Ukraine in ten months, observing a slowdown in Russian troop advances even as air raids continue unabated. In the Zhytomyr region, rescuers searched for survivors beneath the rubble of homes destroyed by attacks. In Kharkiv, the mayor described a recent day of strikes as one of the biggest on the city, resulting in fatalities.
Zelensky emphasized that the bombardments appear to be Russia's response to a proposal for a temporary truce during the Orthodox Easter celebrations. He noted that the Russians have intensified their strikes, turning expected silence during the holiday into an escalation of conflict. Additionally, Ukraine has carried out its own targeting of Russian energy facilities in a show of retaliation. Despite ongoing military operations, Zelensky reiterated the offer for a holiday truce and expressed a willingness for continued dialogue through U.S. intermediaries, though doubts remain over Moscow's intentions amidst shifting global contexts favoring Russia.
