Zambia's president has weighed into a cultural debate that has erupted online after the president of Ghana arrived in Zambia wearing a traditional outfit called a fugu. Some Zambians mockingly called it a blouse. However, Zambia's leader hit back by sharing his love for the design, saying he would be ordering more of that stuff for himself, in a video posted on X from the Ghana–Zambia Business Forum held in Lusaka this week. Ghana's foreign minister noted that the social media buzz reflects a desire among young people to reclaim their cultural roots. In Ghana, a movement encouraging traditional attire has initiated Fugu Friday, where people wear African clothing. The online banter sparked strong reactions, leading President Hakainde Hichilema to express his admiration and announce that he would be ordering more fugu after the discussions on social media took place. On his three-day state visit, President Mahama wore the fugu, a traditional garment important in Ghanaian culture, while President Hichilema donned a suit and tie, inciting humorous comments on various platforms. Leaders from both nations emphasized the significance of cultural identity, with Ghanaian officials highlighting the fugu as a symbol of dignity and heritage.
