MADISON, Wisc. (AP) — The bluntest assessment of Republican failures during this week's elections in Wisconsin came from one of their own.

“We got our butts kicked,” said U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, who is running for governor.

Tiffany's comments reflect the shockwaves sent through Republican ranks after significant Democratic victories in both the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the mayoral office in Waukesha, a traditionally conservative suburb of Milwaukee. The impact of these results has been further compounded by Republican concerns about a Georgia special election, where their candidate won by a notably thinner margin than prior elections.

These shifts from red to blue have contributed to a growing sense of Democratic momentum as the November midterms approach, during which control of the U.S. House, U.S. Senate, and various state governments is at stake.

“Democrats have overperformed everywhere from rural to urban areas,” noted Democratic consultant Jared Leopold. “This serves as a significant early warning of what November 2026 could look like.”

Amidst the turmoil, some Republicans expressed confidence, stating that their fundraising remains robust compared to their Democratic counterparts. However, it has become clear that Republicans face an uphill battle as they assess the implications of recent election results.

Special elections, typically viewed as unreliable indicators, have, nevertheless, showcased Democratic strength in strategically vital areas. Democrats flipped districts that have recently been solidly Republican—highlighting an enthusiasm gap that could signal trouble for the GOP ahead of the major elections later this year.

Wisconsin saw a particularly striking change this week as Democrats secured victories in key statewide races, suggesting a growing dissatisfaction with Republican policies among voters. With looming gubernatorial elections, the pressure is mounting for Republicans to recalibrate their approaches and address voter concerns more effectively.

The political climate indicates that while Democrats are capitalizing on Republican missteps and growing public discontent, Republicans must act swiftly to regain the confidence of their base to avoid further losses as the midterms draw near.
