CHICAGO (AP) — A significant winter storm has begun to impact large areas of the U.S., including parts of the Northern Plains and the Great Lakes. Residents in these regions are bracing for a drop in temperatures and snowfall accumulating rapidly through the evening. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for several areas around Lake Michigan, expecting wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour and snow totals of as much as 18 inches.
Meteorologist Kevin Doom of the National Weather Service in Romeoville, Illinois, warned, This band is going to drop some very heavy snow and create challenging conditions for the Monday morning commute. They also issued alerts for hazardous travel across several Midwestern states due to the ongoing winter weather.
In addition to snowfall, regions in Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin are facing varying levels of wintery conditions, with predictions ranging from significant snow accumulation to treacherous travel surfaces. In parts of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, up to a foot of snow is expected by Monday, while Indiana could see around 11 inches.
The cold front will also sweep through the southern states, with freezing temperatures anticipated from Texas across to Georgia. Special advisories have been released to gardeners to prepare for the end of the growing season due to these expected freeze conditions.
