A popular South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the country's largest city, Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation grappling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the 40-year-old media personality was approached by three suspects, one of whom opened fire on him before fleeing on foot. The motive of the shooting is unknown and no arrests have been made, according to police.
Fred Kekana, a local police chief, said Stock was attacked outside Zambesi House near Carlton Centre, where he had spent several hours overseeing the installation of security systems. CCTV footage revealed a man with dreadlocks, dressed in what appeared to be a security uniform, opening fire on Stock.
The DJ attempted to flee but collapsed across the street. It was reported that he had an unused firearm on him during the incident and nothing was stolen.
Key evidence, including cartridges, was found at the scene. Police are calling for eyewitnesses to come forward to aid the investigation.
Following the tragedy, tributes have poured in from fans, government officials, and industry peers. His sister, Nicole Stock, expressed her emotional distress over the loss, mentioning how he was a voice for many and pledging to honour his memory.
DJ Warras was known for his charisma and his outspoken stance on various issues facing South African society. His legacy within the media and entertainment space will reportedly live on despite this tragic event.
