Three Israelis were killed in a shooting attack by Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, marking a significant escalation of violence in the region. The attack, which involved gunfire directed at a bus and other vehicles near the village of al-Funduq on Highway 55, left eight others injured, including the seriously wounded bus driver. The victims, identified by the Magen David Adom ambulance service, included two women in their 60s and a man in his 40s.
According to Israeli military sources, the attack was carried out by two individuals who subsequently fled the scene. The Israeli authorities have ramped up their response, establishing roadblocks and launching an operation to capture the alleged assailants. Avichai Ben Tzurya, a paramedic on the scene, described the situation as "very serious," stating that the fatalities were pronounced dead due to their severe gunshot wounds. He also detailed that other victims from the bus were treated for injuries from gunshots and shattered glass, with those affected transported to hospitals in central Israel.
In reaction to the incident, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack, promising to bring the perpetrators to justice and asserting that no one would escape accountability for their actions. Although no Palestinian militant group has claimed responsibility, Hamas commended the attack, framing it as a "heroic response" to Israeli actions, particularly those related to the ongoing conflict stemming from the deadly assault by Hamas on Israel back in October 2023.
The recently heightened tensions have resulted in numerous casualties on both sides, with reports earlier indicating the deaths of two Palestinians during Israeli military operations in the West Bank. The conflict continues to strain relations, raising concerns of further violence as families grieve and communities react to these tragic events.
