Annie Ramos, 22, the wife of Staff Sergeant Matthew Blank, has been released from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention after being held for five days. Ramos, an undocumented immigrant who has lived in the US since she was a toddler, was arrested on April 2nd when the couple went to a military base in Louisiana to obtain a military ID for her and activate her military spouse benefits just days after their wedding.
During her detention, immigration officials labeled Ramos an illegal alien from Honduras. Her arrest took place as she attempted to enter the military base along with her husband. Staff Sergeant Blank expressed profound relief following her release, stating, These have been the worst days of my life and added that he was eager to start their lives together.
Ramos, now focused on securing her immigration status and continuing her education as a biochemistry student, emphasized her desire to live with dignity in her home country. Despite her release, the case has raised concerns about the treatment of families connected to military service members under current immigration policies. Senators and advocacy groups have criticized the detention process, calling it detrimental to military morale and families.
Announcing plans for training before a new deployment, Blank reiterated his commitment to serve while also fighting for Ramos's future in the country they both call home.
