DECATUR, Ga. — A 26-year-old U.S. Navy veteran, Olaolukitan Adon Abel, has been charged with multiple counts of murder and aggravated assault in the wake of violent attacks in the Atlanta area that left two people dead and another injured.
Shortly before the shootings, Abel had an intense argument at his communal housing regarding the air conditioning settings, according to his roommates. The conflict reportedly escalated, leading him to leave the residence in the early hours of Monday.
Authorities have not disclosed a clear motive for the attacks. One victim was a federal auditor with the Department of Homeland Security, who was out walking her dog near Abel's residence at the time of the shooting.
Abel, who was granted U.S. citizenship in 2022 while serving in the Navy, is also facing federal firearms charges in connection with the incidents. These charges include possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and unlawful purchase related to the gun used in the shootings.
The chaotic events unfolded on Monday morning when Abel allegedly carried out three different attacks in quick succession. Initial reports indicate that his first victim, 31-year-old Prianna Weathers, was shot at a nearby fast food restaurant. Around 2 a.m., a homeless man was shot while he slept outside a grocery store and remains in critical condition.
Abel has been linked to these violent occurrences despite local authorities questioning whether he had any prior connections to the victims. Law enforcement officials believe at least one of the victims was a random target.
Following the initial attacks, Abel’s vehicle was stopped by the state patrol, leading to the discovery of shell casings linking him to the utilized weapon.
In light of his actions, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin expressed alarm over the matter, specifically regarding Abel's recent citizenship status, and referenced his previous criminal history. Abel had faced accusations of serious offenses in different states prior to the shootings.
