In brief

A suspect was arrested in Bavaria after a fire broke out at the Kehlsteinhaus, the Eagle's Nest, a former Nazi command post. Fire started Friday night, hampered by rugged terrain; 200 responders were on scene and no injuries were reported. The site, once used by Hitler as a summer retreat, has since become a tourist attraction. Authorities are probing whether the blaze was deliberate.

Police in Bavaria detained a suspect after a blaze erupted at the former Nazi command post known as the Kehlsteinhaus or Eagle's Nest.

The fire was reported at 21:15 local time on Friday evening, and because the building sits high in the mountains, small teams of firefighters struggled to bring it under control, although by Saturday night it was still smoldering.

Hundreds of emergency workers were dispatched and no injuries were reported. Authorities are now investigating whether the incident was deliberate and if the suspect had any ties to the blaze.

The Eagle's Nest, built in 1938, was a key site in Hitler's summer getaway in the Bavarian Alps, where he used it for meetings and to devise plans for the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941.

Since the end of World War Two the site has survived and is now a popular tourist attraction, offering guided tours and a mountain inn, while the Kehlsteinhaus website warns of its grim Nazi past.
