In a bid to preserve the integrity of the iconic Molly Malone statue in Dublin, city officials will be deploying stewards to protect the beloved figure on Suffolk Street. The statue, a tribute to the central character of the famous folk song "Molly Malone," has faced damage from an influx of visitors who often touch its breasts in hopes of good luck. This behavior has resulted in discoloration, prompting the council's proactive measures.

The stewards will be stationed near the statue for a week in May, not only providing protection but also educating onlookers about the significance of Molly Malone in Irish folklore. The council announced its plans following public complaints regarding the ongoing damage, which has required repeated repairs to the statue over the years.

The initiative aligns with the “Leave Molly mAlone” campaign spearheaded by Trinity College Dublin student Tilly Cripwell, who wants to preserve the statue's integrity while encouraging respect for cultural symbols. Along with the stewards, the council aims to restore the statue’s bust to maintain its cultural respect as a landmark representing working-class Dublin.
