In brief

Stocks climbed on Wednesday, as the Nasdaq, Dow Jones, and S&P 500 all gained between 1‑1.8% following Democrats’ midterm victory. The rally was supported by President Trump's social‑media acceptance of the results, while concerns about upcoming AI legislation tempered gains for some technology shares.

The US stock market opened higher Wednesday after Democrats swept the 2026 midterm elections, taking control of both the House and Senate, according to Al Jazeera.

The Nasdaq rose 1 % at 9:30 am ET, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 1.8 % and the S&P 500 added 1.1 % to its opening levels.

Retailers that rely on imports were among the biggest uplifters, with Walmart up 1.3 % and Target up 3.3 %. Health‑insurance companies saw mixed results: UnitedHealthcare fell 2.9 %, CVS Health slid 12 %, and Cigna advanced 1.6 %.

President Donald Trump’s social‑media post announcing his acceptance of the election results helped ease political uncertainty, according to Al Jazeera.

Technology stocks had a varied response; Oracle and Nvidia both opened lower, while Alphabet – the parent of Google – experienced a 3.5 % uptick at the bell.

Dan Ives, managing partner of Yorkville Ives, noted:

There is no way to sugarcoat that Democrats taking control, especially over the Senate, will create some major hurdles for AI and tech legislation in the Beltway over the next two years. We estimate 10 % of datacenters will not happen now.

Oil prices reacted to the election outcome, with global benchmark Brent crude falling 3.09 % to $100.40 a barrel, and West Texas Intermediate crude dropping 3.13 % to $93.08.

Al Jazeera also highlighted that Democrats performed strongly in states with significant AI buildout, mentioning Ohio, Texas, and a recent gubernatorial win reflecting broader shifts.

Overall, the market is buoyed by expectations of future policy changes, though the new Senate majority may prompt tighter scrutiny of AI and tech regulation.
