On Tuesday, Democratic and New York City‑backed candidates Brad Lander, Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez captured the 10th, 13th and 7th congressional districts, respectively, in the 2026 midterm election. All three were considered shoo‑ins after the June 23 primaries and won heavily Democratic seats.

Governor Kathy Hochul was projected to win re‑election, leading Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman by more than 20 points with more than half the votes counted, per Times of Israel.

Al Jazeera highlights a broader progressive push across the state, noting that the three new representatives were endorsed by NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani and that their policy platforms included cutting U.S. military aid to Israel.

Al Jazeera also reported that the new representatives spoke to the public on Tuesday, addressing President Donald Trump’s pledge to cease annual military aid to Israel.

Adin Lenchner, progressive strategist for Carroll Street Campaigns, said:

"To me, the national story is about this new generation of progressive leaders and getting excited about those who will be inspired by them just as they were inspired by Mamdani."

The election also saw incumbent US Representative Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez hold the 14th district, Micah Lasher win his first term after defeating Republican Caroline Shinkle, and Grace Meng retain her Queens seat against Joseph Chou.
