The Indonesian military seized seven firearms from members of the Free Papua Movement after a firefight in the Kali Senami area of Dekai district, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Pegunungan, according to Antara. The incident took place while TNI patrols were conducting routine surveillance in the region. As troops approached a suspected hideout, they encountered OPM members, sparking an exchange of gunfire.

After the firefight, the soldiers secured a cache of weapons. TNI officials report the confiscated items consisted of two handguns and five long‑barreled firearms, along with ammunition, sighting equipment, binoculars and other gear. The specific types and conditions of the firearms are still being identified.

Brig. Gen. Riyanto, the TNI Habema Operations Commander, said the seizure reduced the potential threat to public safety. He added that the operation was a measure to restrict the movement of the separatist group and enable residents to carry out daily activities safely, emphasizing the army’s role in supporting lasting peace in the region.

Every firearm secured means a reduced potential threat to human safety. Soldiers must remain firm, professional, and measured in carrying out their duties, while prioritizing the protection of the public,

Riyanto noted that the seized weapons have been transferred to military headquarters for further examination. No additional reports on the incident have appeared beyond the Antara coverage.
