In brief
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, the Research Council of Norway, and the Singapore Maritime Institute announced a joint grant call aimed at advancing alternative fuels, vessel energy efficiency, and digital green shipping operations. Each partner has committed over two million dollars in funding, with projects required to involve research institutions and industry partners from both countries. This is the third such partnership, following calls in 2015 and 2018.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) announced on Thursday a new joint research grant call to help decarbonise international shipping.
Proposals must involve research and industry partners from both Singapore and Norway and may receive funding for up to four years. The grant will support projects in three priority areas: alternative fuels and energy infrastructure; vessel energy efficiency and emissions reduction; and digitalisation and greener shipping operations.
The SMI will provide up to 2.7 million Singapore dollars (about US$2.12 million) for Singapore‑based teams, while the RCN will allocate up to 20 million Norwegian kroner (about US$2.15 million) for Norwegian partners. Both amounts represent the first major monetary commitment from each country in this series of joint grants.
This is the third Singapore‑Norway research grant call, following 2015 and 2018 initiatives that funded four projects focused on maritime energy efficiency and emissions reduction. The new call continues a long‑standing partnership aimed at reducing global shipping emissions.
