In brief

Singapore and Argentina have made the Mercosur‑Singapore Free Trade Agreement fully operational, completing its implementation with all four founding Mercosur member states. The pact lifts import tariffs on 96 percent of products over a 15‑year period and is expected to open opportunities in food, energy, infrastructure, logistics, technology and services. Xinhua reports the agreement enhances Singapore's economic ties with Latin America.

On Sunday, November 2, Singapore and Argentina brought the Mercosur‑Singapore Free Trade Agreement into force, completing its implementation with all four founding Mercosur member states.

Xinhua reports that the pact eliminates import tariffs on about 96 percent of products for up to 15 years, with roughly 25 percent of tariff lines receiving immediate duty‑free access.

The agreement also establishes common rules of origin and more transparent customs procedures, covering trade in goods and services, investment, digital trade, intellectual property and economic cooperation.

According to Xinhua, this move marks a milestone in Singapore’s engagement with Latin America, following earlier implementation with Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil, and opens new opportunities in food, energy, infrastructure, logistics, technology and services.

According to Xinhua, a statement from Singapore’s Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry and the Argentinian Embassy in Singapore said:

Argentina’s position as a major agricultural and food producer supports Singapore’s efforts to diversify food import sources and strengthen food resilience. There are also opportunities in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, logistics, technology and services.
