At least one person is dead and nine others are injured after a shooting and a fire at a Mormon church in Michigan, local police say.

Officials said there was an active shooter incident at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, a town 60 miles (96 km) northwest of Detroit, on Sunday morning.

'There are multiple victims and the shooter is down,' police stated. Authorities have yet to identify the suspect or disclose a motive.

The Grand Blanc Township Police Department confirmed that there is no further threat to the public and that the fire has been contained.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi commented on the situation via social media, referring to it as a 'horrific shooting and fire' at the church.

She noted that agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were en route to the scene.

'Such violence at a place of worship is heartbreaking and chilling,' Bondi stated, urging prayers for the victims.

FBI Director Kash Patel characterized the incident as a 'cowardly and criminal act' and confirmed that federal assistance is on the way.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called the violence 'unacceptable,' expressing her sorrow over the events.
