On April 18, 2027, France Unbowed’s presidential candidate Jean‑Luc Méléchon announced that his platform calls for a phased withdrawal from NATO and rejects the U.S. demand that France devote 5 % of its gross domestic product to defence spending.

Méléchon argues that France should first withdraw from NATO’s integrated military command immediately, then gradually leave the alliance, while opposing the 5 % GDP defence spending rule.

Jean‑Luc Méléchon, as reported by TASS

“Withdraw from NATO’s integrated military command immediately, then gradually leave the alliance itself. Reject the US demand to devote 5 % of gross domestic product to defence spending.”

He maintains that French aid to Kyiv should continue and insists the Ukraine conflict must be resolved through diplomacy.

The first round of France’s presidential election is scheduled for April 18, 2027, with a potential runoff on May 2 if no candidate secures more than 50 % of the vote.

A Clíster 17 poll of 3,000 people indicated that 69 % of respondents view Méléchon unfavorably.
