In brief

Wildfires that ravaged Central Israel since Wednesday have largely been contained, with the Fire and Rescue Authority reporting significant progress after a national emergency declaration. While no fatalities occurred, numerous injuries were reported alongside evacuations from affected regions.

Fires that have spread across substantial areas of central Israel since Wednesday have been largely controlled, as reported by the Fire and Rescue Authority. Over 150 firefighting teams worked tirelessly to combat the flames, which devastated approximately 20 square kilometers (7.7 square miles) in the Latrun area, located between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. At least 12 individuals have received treatment for smoke inhalation, but thankfully, no fatalities have been registered. A total of 17 firefighters sustained injuries, according to local news source Kan. Challenging hot and dry weather conditions, coupled with strong winds, hampered efforts to extinguish the flames, prompting warnings from officials about the possibility of flare-ups. "I've been in the service for 24 years, and I've seen many fires, but this one is among the toughest," stated Shlomi Harush, a deputy commander at the Ayalon fire station. In response to the crisis, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a national emergency and ordered evacuations for hundreds of residents. However, the evacuation order for 12 towns in the vicinity of Jerusalem has since been lifted. Countries such as France, Italy, and Spain provided aerial assistance to help manage the outbreak. The wildfires disrupted planned events for Israel's Independence Day, leading to the cancellation of most celebrations and a nationwide prohibition on lighting barbecues, a common custom for the holiday. Meanwhile, a major highway connecting Jerusalem to Tel Aviv has reopened after initial closures. Eyewitness footage circulated online depicted harried individuals fleeing their vehicles as flames surged along the roadway.Confusion remains regarding the fires' origins. President Isaac Herzog attributed the situation to the climate crisis, stating it should not be overlooked. Conversely, Prime Minister Netanyahu has pointed fingers at potential arsonists, reporting that 18 people were arrested. However, police later clarified that only three individuals were in custody and were unrelated to the wildfires.
