In brief

Two additional cases of mpox, a variant driving a severe outbreak in Africa, have emerged in the UK. These cases follow contact with an infected individual previously reported in the country.

Britain's health officials confirmed on Monday that the risk of a larger outbreak remains low, as the two individuals had close household connections with the confirmed case. All three have been offered the mpox vaccine and are currently receiving treatment at hospitals in London, as stated by the United Kingdom Health Security Agency. Susan Hopkins, the agency's chief medical advisor, acknowledged the contagious nature of mpox within households, noting that further cases in the same environment can be anticipated.Historically, mpox, also known as monkeypox, has been a persistent health issue in West and Central Africa for over five decades. The wider global outbreak that began in 2022 had seen the virus spread to various regions, including Europe and the US. For some time, cases have dwindled in Britain and Europe, but the newly identified variant poses significant threats. The Clade Ia subtype currently responsible for outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo has led to alarming statistics, with over 30,000 infections and nearly 1,000 fatalities reported this year, according to the World Health Organization. UNICEF has noted that more than half of the recent cases in Congo are among children, underscoring the urgent need for public health interventions.
