In the early results of Uganda's presidential election, President Yoweri Museveni has taken a commanding lead, securing 76% of the votes based on 45% of polling stations reporting, as announced by the electoral agency on Friday morning.
Opposition leader Bobi Wine trails significantly with approximately 20% of the votes. This election, held amid heightened tensions and a history of violence during the campaign, marks Museveni's pursuit of a seventh consecutive term in office at the age of 81.
Following the election, Wine has alleged massive fraud, claiming unfair practices occurred during the voting process, which was conducted under an internet blackout. Despite these serious claims, he has not yet provided substantial evidence, and the authorities have yet to respond.
Furthermore, the National Unity Platform (NUP), led by Wine, reported that their candidate was effectively placed under house arrest by security forces who surrounded his home.
The election process itself faced multiple challenges, with polling delays of up to four hours reported in various locations across the country, attributed to logistical barriers and alleged technical failures of biometric voter verification systems.
