Vance Critiques Netanyahu Over Misaligned US‑Israel Priorities
In a CBS interview scheduled to air on Sunday, Vice‑President JD Vance indicated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has "got some things wrong" in pursuing Israel’s interests. Vance said that while the U.S. and Israel are close partners, their goals sometimes diverge.
The remark follows recent tensions: the U.S. President Donald Trump and Israel clashed over military action in Lebanon that heightened regional hostilities and threatened peace talks with Tehran. Vance noted that the U.S. must choose the side of its people when differences arise, though he declined to provide specific examples.
The U.S. and Iran have exchanged strikes for a second day in a row, straining a ceasefire that has been in place since April. The renewed hostilities stem from Israel’s operations aimed at Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Trump’s campaign to revive the Strait of Hormuz and curb Iran’s nuclear program, coupled with public criticism of Netanyahu’s aggressive stance, signals heightened diplomatic friction.
Netanyahu, who faces upcoming elections, insists that diplomatic ties remain strong and that any disagreements are resolved as “great friends.” He also highlighted that the relationship remains “friendly” despite tactical disagreements.
The comments reflect a broader American sentiment, with polling showing increasing opposition to the Iran conflict and a more critical view of Israel. The souring relationship comes as Israel must also address domestic concerns leading up to the November elections.
