The remains of at least 50 infants and six adults have been dumped at a graveyard in Trinidad and Tobago, police say. The country's police service (TTPS) reported that the bodies were found in the town of Cumuto, approximately 40 kilometers from the capital, Port of Spain. According to initial investigations, this may involve an 'unlawful disposal of unclaimed corpses'. It remains unclear whether this disturbing incident is connected to the gang violence that has plagued Trinidad and Tobago, a country known for its high murder rate. The police also noted that five of the six adults, comprising four men and two women, had identification tags, indicating that two had undergone post-mortem examinations. Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro expressed deep concern over the find, stating that any individuals or institutions responsible will be held accountable. This inspection comes amid a renewed state of emergency in Trinidad and Tobago, which has granted police additional search and arrest powers since March 2. The US state department has issued several travel advisories regarding crime and terrorism risks in the country. Despite violent crime rates reportedly decreasing since 2024, issues surrounding safety remain a challenge.
