Two pilots have tragically lost their lives following a collision between a passenger plane and a fire truck at LaGuardia Airport in New York. The incident occurred shortly after Air Canada flight AC8646 landed from Montreal on Sunday night.
According to reports, the firefighting vehicle had been called to respond to a separate incident when the collision happened on the tarmac. Eyewitness photographs depict the plane tilting at an alarming angle, with the cockpit nearly sheared off, while the fire truck lies overturned amidst the debris.
Emergency services rapidly deployed to the scene, where it was later confirmed that at least 41 people were taken to hospitals for treatment. While 31 were discharged, others sustained serious injuries. Fortunately, the two individuals in the fire truck were reported to be in stable condition and out of immediate danger.
As investigations unfold, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will review the aircraft's speed at the time of the accident, the staffing levels in the air traffic control tower, and other relevant factors. Authorities have yet to release the names of the deceased pilots.
LaGuardia Airport, one of the busiest in the U.S., has been temporarily closed following the incident, with hundreds of flights canceled and significant disruptions expected. Travelers are advised to seek alternate routes and expect delays.
