SHREVEPORT, La. (FlashPoint) — A shocking shooting incident in Shreveport, Louisiana, resulted in the deaths of eight children, including seven related to the shooter, and two women, making it the deadliest shooting in more than two years nationwide, authorities reported.
During a news conference outside the scene of the crimes, officials expressed their disbelief and asked for patience and prayers from the community. This is a tragic situation — maybe the worst tragic situation we've ever had, said Tom Arceneaux, the mayor.
Mourners gathered outside the residence, laying flowers and lighting candles in memory of the victims, highlighting the community's sorrow as sentiments were shared about hugging loved ones tighter in these difficult times.
The Violence Unfolded Early
The violence erupted before dawn on Sunday when the shooter, identified as 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, reportedly shot a woman in one location before moving to another house where he killed seven children. One child was found dead on the roof, suggesting an attempt to escape, while another child did survive after jumping from the roof.
State Rep. Tammy Phelps commented on the horror experienced by first responders, stating she could only imagine their experiences upon arriving at the scene.
Reportedly, the children were aged between three and eleven years old, described by family as happy kids, very friendly, very sweet.”
The shooter later died following a police pursuit that ended with officers firing at him. Investigators believe the shooting was entirely domestic in nature, with reports suggesting a history of domestic strife between Elkins and his wife, who was among the victims.
This tragic incident marks the most significant mass shooting in the U.S. since January 2024, when eight individuals were fatally shot in a suburban neighborhood in Chicago.
