Sudanese Army Claims Major Victory with Capture of Wad Madani
The Sudanese military reports a significant advance in their ongoing conflict against rebel forces, seizing the city of Wad Madani.
The Sudanese army has announced the capture of Wad Madani, a pivotal city in eastern Sudan, marking one of its most substantial victories in the protracted conflict against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Celebrations erupted in Port Sudan as footage circulated showing crowds welcoming the army's entry into the newly liberated city. RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, or Hemedti, confirmed the loss through an emotional audio message, blaming the army's aerial tactics and Iranian-made drone use for the defeat, while vowing to fight on for years to come. Wad Madani, the capital of Al Jazira state, is located 87 miles south of Khartoum. The military clashes that reignited in April 2023 followed rising tensions tied to the RSF's redeployment, which the army perceived as a direct threat. The conflict has led to tens of thousands of deaths and has prompted a massive displacement crisis, with approximately nine million people forced from their homes. Additionally, nearly half of Sudan's population—about 24.6 million individuals—faces severe food insecurity amid worsening famine conditions. Earlier this month, U.S. officials sanctioned Dagalo for his alleged involvement in genocide and other atrocities during the conflict.
