NASA Launches Roman Space Telescope


On Sunday morning the Nancy Grace Roman telescope ascended from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center aboard a Falcon Heavy rocket, embarking on a 100‑day journey to a satellite orbit about a million miles from Earth.

Roman’s design offers a field of view a hundred times wider than that of Hubble or Webb, letting it survey the sky with unprecedented speed and depth. The telescope will study dark energy, dark matter, exoplanets, and billions of galaxies while exploring the edges of the observable universe.


NASA administrator Nicky Fox highlighted the mission as a “giant leap forward” in looking for habitable worlds beyond our solar system, while project manager Jackie Townsend praised the launch as a glorious dawn of discovery. The satellite will begin wide‑field imaging once it reaches its orbit, and planners aim for a primary lifespan of five years with a goal to operate ten.


The telescope is named after Nancy Grace Roman, a pioneer who led NASA’s first female executive team and helped secure the Hubble telescope’s approval. Her legacy now lives on in a craft designed to probe the universe’s most elusive phenomena, from black holes to the first stars after the Big Bang.
